About Dr. Trey Ideker Trey Ideker, PhD, has served as a faculty member at UC San Diego since 2003, with current appointments in the Departments of Medicine, Bioengineering, and Computer Science and Engineering. Additionally, he holds leadership positions as Director or Co-Director of several federally-funded research centers, including the Cancer Cell Map Initiative, the Bridge2AI Functional Genomics Data Generation Program, and, most recently, an ARPA-H ADAPT Precision Oncology Center. Ideker received BS and MEng degrees in Computer Science from MIT and a PhD in Genome Sciences from the University of Washington under Drs. Lee Hood and Dick Karp. He was then a David Baltimore Fellow at the Whitehead Institute before joining the UCSD faculty in 2003. He was named a Top 10 Innovator by Technology Review, received the 2009 ICSB Overton Prize, and is a Fellow of the AAAS, AIMBE and ISCB organizations. Ideker previously served as a member of the Board of Scientific Advisors to the NIH National Cancer Institute and National Human Genome Research Institute. He also serves on the editorial boards of Cell, Cell Systems, PLoS Computational Biology, and Molecular Systems Biology. Since 2020 he has been named a Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher (top 1% by citations). Ideker has published >280 scientific articles to date, which have been cited a total of >119,000 times. |

Jack McGrory served as City Manager of the City of San Diego from March 1991 through August 1997. He worked for the City of San Diego for twenty-three years.
Following his tenure as City Manager, he assumed the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of Price Enterprises, Inc. on September 2, 1997 and oversaw the sale of that company. From 1999 to 2000 he was Chief Operating Officer of the San Diego Padres and from 1999-2002 he was President of the subsidiary responsible for building Petco Park and the adjacent commercial development. From 2003-2004 he served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Price Legacy Corporation, a real estate investment trust specializing in the acquisition and management of retail power centers. Jack was Manager of The Price Group from 2001–2009. The Group was an investor in more than $1 billion in residential development with Remark and was the principal investor in Trans West Housing which built approximately 2,000 houses in Southern California. He was also a Director and Executive Vice President of PriceSmart, Inc., from 1999 until 2001. Jack is a member of the California State University Board of Trustees (appointed by Governor Brown); the past Chairman of the Campanile Foundation Board, SDSU; the Chairman of the Veterans Council at SDSU; Chairman of the School of Public Affairs Council at SDSU: Chairman Emeritus of Teach For America San Diego; the Board of Trustees of the Craig Venter Institute; past President of the Mainly Mozart Board of Directors; the Board of Visitors, USD Law School; the Board of Directors of the YMCA of San Diego County; the Board of Youth Access Academy; and the Board of Directors of the Dan Diego River Park Foundation. Jack has been a member of the Board of Overseers at UCSD and the USS Midway Museum. He has also been a lecturer for twenty-five years in the School of Public Affairs at San Diego State University and serves as a lecturer in the Urban Studies and Planning Program at the University of California, San Diego. Jack graduated from Colgate University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and received his Master’s Degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University. He earned his Law Degree from the University of San Diego and is a member of the State Bar of California. In 2017 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from the CSU Board of Trustees. Jack McGrory was a Marine Corps Lieutenant from 1971 to 1974 and served as a Rifle Platoon Commander. He has five children and seven grandchildren. |

Professor Jack A Gilbert earned his Ph.D. from Unilever and Nottingham University, UK in 2002, and received his postdoctoral training at Queens University, Canada. From 2005-2010 he was a senior scientist at Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK; and from 2010-2018 he was Group Leader for Microbial Ecology at Argonne National Laboratory, a Professor of Surgery, and Director of The Microbiome Center at University of Chicago. In 2019 he moved to University of California San Diego, where he is a Professor in Pediatrics and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Associate Vice Chancellor for Marine Science, and Director of both the Microbiome and Metagenomics Center and the Microbiome Core Facility. Dr. Gilbert uses molecular analysis to test fundamental hypotheses in microbial ecology. He cofounded the Earth Microbiome Project and American Gut Project. He has authored more than 450 peer reviewed publications and book chapters on microbial ecology. He is the founding Editor in Chief of mSystems journal. In 2014 he was recognized on Crain’s Business Chicago’s 40 Under 40 List, and in 2015 he was listed as one of the 50 most influential scientists by Business Insider, and in the Brilliant Ten by Popular Scientist. In 2016 he won the Altemeier Prize from the Surgical Infection Society, and the WH Pierce Prize from the Society for Applied Microbiology for research excellence. In 2017 he co-authored “Dirt is Good”, a popular science guide to the microbiome and children’s health. In 2018, he founded BiomeSense Inc to produce automated microbiome sensors. In 2021 Dr Gilbert became the UCSD PI for the National institutes of Health’s $175M Nutrition for Precision Medicine program. In 2023 he became President of Applied Microbiology International, and won the 2023 IFF Microbiome Science Prize. |

As President and CEO, Betsy Brennan leads the Downtown San Diego Partnership, a member-based organization whose mission is to promote an economically prosperous and culturally vibrant urban center. The Partnership proudly serves more than 400 member businesses, representing thousands of residents, employees, and Downtown property owners. Ms. Brennan and her staff are also responsible for administering the Clean & Safe Program, a $9-million property and business improvement district of the City of San Diego, which offers enhanced maintenance and safety services throughout 275 blocks in the heart of Downtown San Diego. Ms. Brennan obtained her Juris Doctor, with a specialization in land use, at the University of San Diego (2003). During her time in law school, she participated in the University of San Diego’s Land Use Clinic and interned for a Commissioner of the Board of the Port of San Diego. After law school, Ms. Brennan served as Chief of Staff for the City of San Diego’s first-ever City Council President, Scott Peters, and was integral in the transition to a strong-mayor form of government, as well as in the establishment of the roles and policies for the San Diego City Council (2002-2008). Ms. Brennan has a proven track record of leading civic engagement, grassroots community involvement, external relations, economic development, and innovative programs for institutions such as the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina (Vice President of Development, 2016-2018), Tahoe Forest Health System in Lake Tahoe (Executive Director, Foundation, 2015-2016), Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (Chief of Staff to the President, 2011- 2015), and San Diego State University (Chief of Staff to the President, 2008-2011). Ms. Brennan holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in International Politics and Spanish from the University of Richmond in Virginia (1998). She is a proud graduate of several regional and statewide leadership programs – including LEAD San Diego (Impact Class of 2006 and Influence Class of 2018) and Leadership CA (2011) – and has served on several local nonprofit boards of directors, including her current positions on the boards of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, University of San Diego School of Law Board of Visitors, and the Columbia Community Foundation. Ms. Brennan is also a member of Lambda Alpha International, a highly honorary and selective group of professionals who have distinguished themselves in various disciplines that relate to the use and re-use of land. Ms. Brennan has received several noteworthy acknowledgements of her community commitment, including San Diego Business Journal’s “500 Most Influential Business Leaders” (2019), San Diego Magazine’s “50 People to Watch” (2008), San Diego Metropolitan Magazine’s “Top 40 Under 40” (2010), and San Luis Obispo Tribune’s “Top 20 Under 40” (2013). She especially appreciated receiving SDSU’s Associated Students Presidential Leadership Award for her collaborative style and dedication to working alongside students to better serve SDSU and for her excellence in service to the greater San Diego community (2011).
