Our Club and a delegation from the Rotary Club of Tijuana,  will  be honoring our current member, and past president David Shaw for his 20 years of leadership service in our Tijuana scholars program.

Sarah Bowen served twenty years in the U.S. Navy, beginning as a nuclear trained Surface Warfare Officer (SWO(N)) and then transitioning to space systems engineering and acquisitions as an Engineering Duty Officer (EDO).

She is now a senior systems engineer with Titanium Cobra Solutions and a volunteer with the Gary Sinise Foundation.

We do this by creating and supporting unique programs designed to entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen, and build communities."

I am a retired pediatric orthopedic surgeon originally from Ottawa, Canada. I received my orthopedic residency training there and did extra fellowship training in Toronto in pediatric orthopedics, scoliosis, and musculoskeletal tumor surgery. I moved my family to Las Vegas to begin a 19 year private practice in 1993. I had a great 19 years during which time I developed a spine implant system and several other innovations. I patented a system of linked lever scoliosis derotation surgery in 2004. I licensed my patents to Biomet Spine Company and royalties permitted me to retire in 2014 and pursue my passion of training in developing countries, where there is a huge unmet need. I began doing training missions in developing countries in 2000. 

“Rev. Dr. Mark Hargreaves, a third-generation priest in the Church of England, serves as Rector of St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in La Jolla. He came to Southern California in January 2016 after serving at churches in London for 25 years, most recently at London’s St.. Peter’s Notting Hill. Mark studied Theology at Oriel College, Oxford, and has a Ph.D. from Robinson College, Cambridge. He also gained a Master of Arts in Christianity & the Arts from the National Gallery and King’s College, London.  He has a keen interest in the role the arts have played a role in religious expression, and he recently has studied church architecture.  Mark is the author of “The Sacred Architecture of Irving Gill,” which examines 14 Southern California churches Gill designed.  He will discuss the impact Gill has had on San Diego architecture in general, and specifically on local church buildings.?

Shawn will explain the gravity of the evacuation challenge and discuss how his organization is developing a coalition of like-minded organizations to provide humanitarian support on the ground, arrange relocation opportunities, and help establish long-term plans to honor our promises to the Afghans who once came to our aid.

We look forward to his remarks on the more critical issues facing San Diego County of homelessness, mental health, and immigration.

Our Member, Earl Will bring us up to date on UCSD's journey to become a Division I Athletic school and the impact that has had on the school. He'll also talk about scouting for great athletes.

Prof Gilbert and his student Kara Wiggin at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography will be speaking to us about their alarming research about the extent of plastic pollution in our oceans.

Diane Kane is a former Senior Planner from the City of San Diego, where she handled large-scale historical surveys as part of the long range planning process.

She is an active member of friends of San Diego architecture.
