Coming October 20th, Alexander Gurshunov on "El Nino and our changing climate"
Dr. Alexander “Sasha” Gershunov is a research meteorologist and climate scientist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, where his work explores the connections between weather, climate, and society. His research focuses particularly on California and the western United States, examining climate variability and change, heat waves, drought and precipitation, atmospheric rivers, Santa Ana winds, marine-layer clouds, and extreme weather. A major focus of Dr. Gershunov’s work is understanding how a changing climate affects communities. His research has explored the impacts of extreme weather on wildfires, water resources, ecosystems, energy, and public health, as well as how human activity influences climate. His recent work includes research into Southern California’s increasing heat risks, including how warming ocean temperatures can contribute to hotter, more humid conditions and elevated nighttime temperatures, particularly in coastal communities. Through decades of climate research, Dr. Gershunov helps translate complex climate science into a better understanding of what changing weather patterns mean for Southern California and the people who live here. |
